Abu was a sergeant from French West Africa who fought on the side of France during World War I.

In 1916, Abu took part in the Battle of Verdun and was regularly chosen for "night patrol". When Corporal Indiana Jones volunteered for a mission to cross no man's land and spy on a German command bunker, Abu was glad someone had stepped forward. The sergeant helped camouflage Jones's hands and face with charcoal, joking that the corporal was now as pretty as he before giving advice on how to avoid enemy fire and to play dead if caught in a flare.

After Lieutenant Gaston arrived to brief Jones further, Abu echoed his wish of good luck to the soldier by patting the corporal's shoulder.
