Anubis was the mythical preparer of the dead for the Egyptian underworld represented with the head of a jackal. Statues of the deity stood in the Well of the Souls at Tanis to serve as guardians over the final resting place of the Ark of the Covenant.
Hieroglyphics in the city's Map Room included Anubis' role in protecting the Ark. Before he had seen the statues for himself in 1936, archaeologist René Emile Belloq was uncertain whether the picture on the Map Room wall was of Anubis or another, such as Set. One Anubis statue scared the wits out of Sallah when he caught sight of jackal as he and Indiana Jones opened the entrance to the Map Room.
