Auguste Édouard Mariette was a French archaeologist, and one of the top Egyptologists of his day, and founder of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. He also wrote the story that would be the basis for the Verdi opera Aida.

Before the turn of the century, Mariette carried out initial excavations of Tanis, along with William Flinders Petrie.
