The Aztecs were a civilization that lived in modern-day central Mexico, during the 14th through 16th centuries. The Aztecs ruled over neighboring groups, demanding tribute, and built an extensive road system. In the early 1500s, Spanish conquistadors, such as Hernando Cortés, arrived and with local allies, conquered the main cities of the Aztecs.
Many of their cities included huge stone pyramid-shaped temples to honor their gods. They had rituals where a sacrificial victim's heart would be cut out of their chest with a ceremonial knife. The victims were usually villagers, captives, and volunteers. The blood would then be put in a sacred dish and be fed to the gods.
