Cairo was the capital of Egypt, and where Sallah Mohammed Faisel el-Kahir and his family lived. During his search for the Ark of the Covenant in 1936, numerous henchmen of René Emile Belloq and Herman Dietrich attempted to assassinate Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood for possession of the Headpiece to the Staff of Ra. They included the Arab Swordsman and the Monkey Man.

[edit] Behind the scenes
The Holy City of Kairouan in Tunisia was the filming location for Cairo. Appropriately the town's name means "little Cairo". For filming the scenes on Sallah's terrace, 350 television antennas had to be removed from local buildings to present a 1930s skyline.
