Category talk:Reconciled contradictions
From Indiana Jones Wiki
- Should this really be a category? Whether a concensus is reached or not on how something is explainable, it's still not official till someone at Lucasfilm makes it so. Ergo it isn't actually reconciled (and is glorified 'fanon') and even then the category seems rather redundant when any perceived continuity error can be pointed out in a 'behind the scenes' or 'trivia' section. - Yeah, I've always thought this is a silly category/idea. Adamwankenobi 01:26, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
The category exists simply to collect a list of contradictions presented by official, Lucasfilm-sanctioned sources. Now, how such contradictions are addressed is open to debate—certainly mentioning the contradiction in the 'Behind the scenes' or 'Notes and references' is always a good idea, but what about the main body of the article? There are usually several options.
Let's take Toht as an example; the novelization identifies his first name as Arnold, while the Marvel series uses Ernst instead. In this case, I see at least four options:
- We omit the first name entirely from the article's title and main body.
- We go with Arnold, reasoning that the novelization is generally considered more authoritative than the comics.
- We go with Ernst, because the comic was released after the novel, and as such can be considered Lucasfilm's most recent pronouncement on the issue.
- We can combine the two in a way consistent with their usage in both contexts.
Now, in this case, I chose the last option, inspired by Lucasfilm's technique for resolving a similar contradiction. (Belloq's given name alternately appeared as Renee and Emile, so at some point it was decided to combine the two, giving rise to Renee Emile Belloq.) The other options may be equally valid . . . but in this case and others like it, whatever decision is made should be vetted by the community at large (such as it is). That's why the category comes in handy. Icybro 03:37, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
