The Collegiates was a University of Chicago band led by Gregory. In 1920, the Collegiates were playing at a party at the Alpha Sigma Chi fraternity house when cheerleader Susie Hilton discovered that fellow student Indiana Jones could play the soprano saxophone. She encouraged Gregory to allow Jones to join the band for a song so she could hear him play.[1]

However, the band's performance was cut short when Jones began playing jazz, his preferred genre. Jones was dismissed from the stage for playing unrespectable "brothel"/"negro" music.[1]

The Collegiates' set included "By the Light of the Silvery Moon",[1][2] "April Showers",[1] "Toot Toot Tootsie",[1] "Someday Sweetheart"[2] and "Margie".[2]

Behind the scenesEdit

Both Mystery of the Blues and its gamebook adaptation The Roaring Twenties have the Collegiates playing "By the Light of the Silvery Moon" but the song Indiana Jones plays with them and the music they play after he is ejected from the stage are different.

The TV series uses the anachronistic "April Showers" (1921) and "Toot Toot Tootsie" (1922) respectively, while the gamebook favors "Someday Sweetheart" (1919) and "Margie" (1920). Either way, the songs' usage is not without irony: they're all jazz.
