Dagon was the god of the Philistines.
According to the King James Bible, when the Philistines captured the Ark of the Covenant they placed the relic before a great statue of Dagon in Ashdod which was later found toppled beside the Ark, an event attributed to the wrath of the Hebrew God.
Behind the scenesEdit
Dagon was mentioned in the now-defunct IndianaJones.com Marshall College database entry on the Ark of the Covenant. Despite being presented with an out-of-universe perspective, the article included excerpts of text adapted and re-edited from the Raiders of the Lost Ark Sourcebook as told by Marcus Brody. The database corrected Brody's account of the Ark in Ashdod (unnamed in the book) by mentioning that the statue was of Dagon and not, as stated in the Sourcebook, a depiction of Baal.
