Indy takes his advanced archaeology students on an expedition of caves once inhabited by Hopi Indians. A pair of armed men claiming to be from the Bureau of Indian Affairs warns the class to stay away; suspicious, Indy sneaks off after dusk to investigate, and finds that the maze of caverns is being converted into a sophisticated criminal hideout by a unscrupulous entrepreneur named Busby. To ensure Indy's silence, Busby kidnaps one of his students, Lucy Giles. Indy mounts a rescue, only to discover that Lucy is Busby's daughter. The police arrive on the scene, and after a foiled attempt to flee by plane, Busby and Lucy are carted away in handcuffs.
