Eidel was an officer in the SS-Leibstandarte and a member of Adolf Hitler's inner circle.

Eidel was a small, thin man who was more of an office worker than a soldier, but who enjoyed flaunting his authority over others. As a result, Colonel Herman Dietrich disliked him as well as the other SS members who he perceived as being black-uniformed thugs who thought they ran the world. It was Eidel who assigned Dietrich the all-important task of recovering the Ark of the Covenant in 1936, and also told him to hire the Frenchman René Emile Belloq.

Behind the scenesEdit

Eidel only appears in the novelization of Raiders of the Lost Ark by Campbell Black. His authority over Dietrich suggests he is of a higher rank than the Colonel, although no rank is given.

In Colonel Herman Dietrich's entry at the now defunct, Eidel is never mentioned as the one who gives Dietrich the task of hire Belloq to find the Ark of the Covenant. Instead, it is mentioned that Dietrich was hiring Belloq to search the Ark under the orders of the Schutzstaffel.[1]
