Solomon Black was a large gangster whose criminal headquarters was based in Krikamibo, Liberia.
Biography[]
Though Solomon Black claimed he was a business man, he kidnapped Edith Dunne and lured Indiana Jones to him while the pair were searching for the Ikons of Ikammanen in 1936.[1]
Black took them aboard a ship and traveled to an island off the coast of Africa. Edith and Indy were put ashore to find the Ikons while Black waited behind. Once he had determined that Indy had cleared a safe path to the treasure, Black followed only to have to join forces with the archaeologist to fend off the belligerent locals. They escaped back to the ship with the Ikons but the ship was torpedoed by a German submarine which saw to it that Black and all but one of the Ikons were lost with the vessel.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
In the Readers of the Lost Ark letters section of issue 12 of The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones, the Marvel Comics writers in charge of the series mentioned, when asked if they could bring back any villains from Raiders of the Lost Ark (which they denied due to most of them dying by the end of the film), stated that they were considering to bring back villains from previous issues, among them the ostensibly "blown-up" Solomon Black.[2] Black ultimately never returned in the series nor in any other Indiana Jones production, however.
