The Fourth German Soldier was a Nazi soldier who participated during the Nazi effort to find the Holy Grail in 1938. He served under the orders of Colonel Ernst Vogel.

Biography

In 1938, during the Nazi effort to find the Holy Grail, the Fourth German Soldier served under the command of Ernst Vogel.

Upon the arrival of the Nazis at the Republic of Hatay, he was ordered by Vogel to travel on one of the trucks driven by Nazi drivers during the quest of the Temple of the Sun. When the archaeologist Indiana Jones appeared on the scene to rescue his father Henry Walton Jones, Senior and Marcus Brody from Vogel, who had took them as hostages inside his tank, the Fourth German Soldier along with his companions were called by Vogel to help him kill Indiana.

After three of his comrades were shot by Jones, the Fourth German Soldier jumped from his truck into the tank and tried to stab Jones with his knife to avoid the same fate of his companions. However, Jones managed to hit him and throw him aside, losing his knife in the process. At that moment, Vogel pulled a chain out of the hatch and tried to hang Jones. After recovering of the blow, the Fourth German Soldier tried to help Vogel to kill Jones, but this one struck him very well in the face that made him falling to the metal tread of the tank, which it pulled him until the end of this and he fell to the desertic ground, where he was crushed to death by the tread.

Behind the scenes

The Fourth German Soldier was portrayed by an uncredited actor in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

During the early development of the film's original script, written by Jeffrey Boam, the Fourth German Soldier was originally going to not exist in the story. Instead, the only enemies who were going to fight against Indiana Jones were originally Walter Chandler (Walter Donovan in the final film) and the Hatay Tank Driver.[1][2]

In the Last Crusade novelisation, the Fourth German Soldier isn'nt the only Nazi soldier that perished for being crushed by the Mark VII's metalic treads. In the novel, he dies crushed by the treads along another Nazi soldier.
