Marat: "Who's the fastest of the Belgians?"
French Sergeant: "The new one. Him. Rides like the wind."
―Major Marat and the French Sergeant[src]

The French Sergeant was a French soldier, who served in the 2nd Army under General Robert Nivelle at the Battle of Verdun during World War I. He was assigned to guard the 2nd Army Headquarters in Souilly.

Biography

One day in September 1916, the sergeant stood at a post outside the main gate of the 2nd Army Headquarters. While at his duty, he became acquainted with the various Belgian motorcycle couriers that had just been brought in to replace the previous couriers. When Major Marat came out with new written orders from General Nivelle, he asked the sergeant for the fastest of the couriers, and the sergeant pointed him to Henri Defense (Indiana Jones), who was busy bouncing a ball off the chateau wall.

Behind the scenes

Jan Kuzelka played the role of the French Sergeant in the episode "Verdun, September 1916" of the The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.
