The Hatay Tank Gunner was one of several soldiers given to Walter Donovan by the Sultan of Hatay for his quest to find the Holy Grail in 1938.

Biography Edit

He manned the gun inside of the tank commanded by Colonel Vogel. He made several attempts to shoot and kill Indiana Jones. He himself wound up being killed when Jones jammed the barrel of the gun with a rock. When the gunner fired, the blockage resulted in an explosive backfire that killed him instantly. His body was subsequently carried over a cliff with the entire tank and Vogel.

Behind the scenes Edit

The Hatay Tank Gunner was played by Trinadidian actor Stefan Kalipha in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

As an interest fact, Stefan Kalipha, the actor who played the gunner, also appeared in the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only as Hector Gonzales, possibly reflecting Indy director Steven Spielberg's original desire to make a Bond film, but as he didn't, he and George Lucas created Indiana Jones instead.

Despite his pivotal role in the film, neither he nor the tank's driver appear in Rob MacGregor's novelization or the comic book as such. There, the tank's crew are (apparently) all German. Apart from this, none of the tank's crew appear in LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures and its sequel. Instead, Vogel appears to control the entire tank.
