Heart of Darkness was an English novella, written by Joseph Conrad and first published in serial form in 1899. It is a story set in Congo, and is regarded as a significant piece of English literature.
In 1943, George McHale and Indiana Jones went in search of a fabled black pearl, and when they mentioned its name, the Heart of Darkness, to their newly hired guide, Marie Arnoux, Jones reminded her that it sounded familiar because of Conrad's story of the same name. Arnoux, having read the story in college, surprised Jones by knowing Conrad's full Polish name.
