John Alden Loring was a field naturalist and taxidermist for the 1909 African expedition for the Smithsonian Institution, led by Theodore Roosevelt.
Loring, a zoologist, was in charge of the small mammal collecting on the expedition, while Edmund Heller, was in charge of the large animal collecting. He was present at the Kirinyaga safari camp when Richard Medlicot came through the taxidermy area, introducing a young Indiana Jones to the safari staff.
