Johnson was a big game hunter. Prior to September 1909, he had shot a lion in Africa, but had only wounded it. Despite Johnson's efforts to hide himself in a tree house, the injured lion returned and killed him.[1]
In September 1909, Teddy Roosevelt recounted Johnson's tragic end to those gathered at dinner at the Kirinyaga safari camp, on the evening that the Jones family had arrived. Frederick Selous thought the story was initially just a story, but Roosevelt claimed to be a witness. After hearing the story, Indiana Jones had trouble sleeping that night for fear of a wounded lion lurking and making sounds nearby.[1]
