Jormungand or the Midgard Serpent was a creature from Norse myth which could encircle the entire globe.
When the gods Thor, Loki and their companions competed with the giants in a series of games for possession of Thor's hammer, the giants cheated. In a challenge to simply lift a cat, the animal was a disguised Midgard Serpent so that when Thor picked up the 'cat' by its midsection, the legs stretched and it continued to touch the ground.
