He lived through the Kamakura period and his blades were believed to be so perfect in design they would achieve sentience of their own and lead the wielder to virtue, refusing to strike any blow made with evil or treacherous intent. The katana Yashaken was created by Masamune and would survive through the centuries into the mid-1930's.

Masamune was described as virtuous, which was reflected in his designs.[1]

While Rising Sun's Masamune is based on legend, it is generally considered the real Masamune and Muramasa lived in seperate time periods and as such, there was no possible apprenticeship.
