"I’m working undercover for the Chinese government monitoring the Black Dragon Triad."
―Mei Ying[src]

Mei Ying was a Chinese secret agent who worked with Indiana Jones while he was searching for the Heart of the Dragon for Marshal Kai Ti Chang.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Years before joining China's intelligence field, Mei Ying was wanted by her father to marry a suitor who worked as a banker and had a nice house. However, Mei still preferred to serve her country and declined to take that path.[1]

Encounter with Indiana Jones[]

In 1935, Mei Ying was introduced to Indiana Jones as Marshal Kai's assistant. Kai wanted Jones to look for the Mirror of Dreams, which would lead him to the Heart of the Dragon, a relic said be able to possess the human mind, in the Emperor's Tomb.[1]

Mei Ying reappeared to Jones while he was held hostage to Nazi officer Albrecht Von Beck, under the guise of a ninja-like savior. However, after throwing him the key to his chains, she once again disappeared. After Jones fought the kraken in the ruins of Belsaurius, Mei Ying resurfaced and revealed to him that she was actually a Chinese secret agent working to stop Marshal Kai, who wasn't the man he pretended to be but the crimelord leader of the Black Dragon Triad. Their encounter, however, was observed by the Feng Twins, Kai's bodyguards, revealing to him her treachery.[1]

Mei Ying as seen in Indiana Jones and The Emperor's Tomb

Joining forces, Jones and Mei Ying traveled to Hong Kong, where a contact of hers, Wu Han[1]–who had already met Jones two years ago[2]–could lead them to Kai's fortress. However, a brawl broke at out the rendezvous, and before Wu Han could get to her, Mei Ying was kidnapped by Von Beck, Kai's ally, and taken to Kai's fortress.[1]

Later, Jones arrived to rescue her after Chang sentenced her to be a sacrifice for betraying him despite his intentions for the two to rule together, only to fall into a trap. By the time the archaeologist caught up, Mei Ying was about to be sacrificed to Kong Tien, in order to recreate the Mirror of Dreams. Possessed by an evil entity, the two fought, but Indy was able to break the spell. Once they escaped from the fortress made it back to Wu Han's ship, Mei lamented not listening to her father over marrying that banker.[1]

The two traveled on to Xian, where the Emperor's Tomb was located. After having found the Heart, Indy became possessed by it. Only Mei Ying's timely arrival was able to bring him back to his senses. However, Kai was awaiting for them outside. Stealing the artifact, he used it to incapacitate Mei Ying while summoning a dragon to fight Indy. After a hard battle, Kai was defeated and Mei Ying, the spell's hold over her was released.[1]

Jones and Mei Ying returned to Hong Kong and the pair decided to spend the night together before Mei Ying moved on to tackle the remnants of the Black Dragon Triad and Jones moved on to attend some business dealings with the Chinese gangster Lao Che.[1]
