Orch Crowloff was once First Mate Turps' best friend and his co-conspirator. In Kafiristan in 1931 the pair attempted to pull a museum heist with Turps acting as getaway driver. They hadn't counted on the intervention of Indiana Jones.
As the two robbers sped from the scene, Indy managed to jump into the back of the vehicle. While Orch tussled with Indy, Turps kept his foot down not wanting to be caught by the authorities.
When the car came to a railway crossing, Turps spied a speeding locomotive. Seeing his chance, he put his foot down and headed on a collision course with the front of the train. Turps jumped from the car at the last minute before impact, leaving Indy and Orch to their fate.
As he landed Turps hit his head on a stone and was knocked unconscious. Somehow, Indy must have jumped to safety at the last minute as Turps was to encounter him again many years later, but Orch Crowloff was killed.
