Sam McLaughlin was an archaeologist with a weakness for Cuban cigars. While he had the appearance of a playboy, McLaughlin was a quick learner dedicated to his work and sought to be one of the best archaeologists in the world.
By the time he was a graduate from St. John's University for three or four years, McLaughlin tended to find himself involved in whatever event was brewing around him. That saw him having to outrace Italian Fascists in the Yucatan jungles and witnessing the uprising in Morocco.
While his experiences with the Fascists had left him extremely distrustful of them and Mussolini, McLaughlin was otherwise trusting and cheerful, especially when encountering a person with contacts at his old school who he would greet with open arms. As long as people played straight with him, the archaeologist was always ready to lend them a hand.
