The Complete Making of Indiana Jones revealed backstory from George Lucas who stated that time in the space between spaces from which the interdimensional beings originate is experienced differently than the Earth, explaining that an hour for them would be like a hundred or a thousand years in the Indiana Jones world. From the visitors' point of view, Francisco de Orellana's 16th century invasion and their 1947 return to Roswell all happened rather quickly.[1]
