"It's a crummy dive in a Nepalese village nobody would otherwise visit, but the locals enjoy the warmth of the fire and the climbers who hike through here like the company and the booze."
Marion Ravenwood[src]

The Raven (also known as the Raven Saloon or the Raven Bar[4]) was Marion Ravenwood's bar in Patan, Nepal.

History[]

Working both as bar and restaurant,[5] The Raven was inherited by Marion Ravenwood following the death of her father Abner, who had bought the tavern to finance his archaeological endeavors. Mohan worked as the bar's enforcer and had been an assistant to both father and daughter.[2]

TheRavenInside

Inside The Raven.

In 1936, The Raven was burned down when Nazi agent Arnold Ernst Toht attempted to steal the headpiece to the Staff of Ra from Marion with one of his men and some local assistance. This forced Indiana Jones to intervene by using his bullwhip to disarm Toht from burning Marion with a hot iron, which started the fire, while Indy and Marion engaged Toht and his gang in a skirmish for the headpiece.

In the end, all of Toht's men were killed during the shootout, while Jones, Ravenwood and Toht barely escaped.[2] Ravenwood and Indy were pressed for time and saw little reason to search the building's remains for possessions afterward. However, Marion was unaware that Abner, fearing his daughter would try to sell them, had hidden several small caches of artifacts under the building's floorboards that survived the blaze.[3]

Legacy[]

Later that year, after retrieving the Ark of the Covenant for the US government, Marion used her share of the payment she and Indy received from Major Eaton and Colonel Musgrove to establish a new nightclub on New York City, called The Raven's Nest. Like its predecessor, however, The Raven's Nest was attacked and burned down by a man chasing artifacts. Losing her nightclub devastated Marion as she hadn't paid the insurance to cover such a loss, but Jones, her silent partner, surprised her up by revealing that he had paid his, jokingly remarking that what had happened her Nepal bar had been enough incentive to take precautions with regard to her business ventures.[6]

Jones would recall the events at The Raven when he was reunited with Marion in 1957 along with their son Mutt Williams during the Soviet attempt led by Irina Spalko to return the Crystal Skull to Akator.[7]

Behind the scenes[]

There was an extended scene at The Raven in Lawrence Kasdan's script for Raiders of the Lost Ark. During Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood's conversation, Marion explains the cause of her father's death and how difficult her life had been for her the past two years. After arranging the next day's meeting to give Indy the Headpiece to the Staff of Ra, Jones goes to leave, but Ravenwood grabs his jacket and kisses him.

The scene was cut down as director Steven Spielberg considered it too long. Elements remain in Campbell Black's novelization and in the comic book adaptation.[8][9]
