William Butler Yeats was a renowned Irish playwright.

Biography[]

In April 1916, Yeats was rehearsing his play at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. After the performers finished the act, Yeats noticed Sean O'Casey and Indiana Jones sitting in the balcony, and invited them to talk once Yeats was through with the actors.[1]

Over tea, Yeats gave his review of a copy of O'Casey's play, and felt that it was too real, preferring theater to be more symbolic, as depicted by his own characters, such as one representing Ireland. He called O'Casey's play "challenging" which O'Casey later revealed to mean "only slightly better than interesting."[1]

After leaving Yeats, O'Casey expressed his frustration with Yeats' criticism and cursed Yeats' name, while throwing the copy of the play he had Yeats review into the harbor.[1]
