Yamada Fukiyo was the wife of Yamada Hajime. She lived with her husband and their daughter Isoko and son Jiro in Nagasaki, Japan. While he was away on intelligence missions, Hajime would frequently correspond with her, using code names to protect their identities with Fukiyo's as Fujiko. This led to joking with her husband about his mistress "Fujiko" and her secret lover "Hanshiro" (his false name).
Fukiyo became a widow following Hajime's death in 1943.
